Home and Living: Polvoron, Homemade Dessert

Mommy Lace’s Polvoron

My meals are not complete without something sweet to finish it off. Polvoron is one of the easiest desserts you can make at home and let your family enjoy. Even the ingredients involved are those easily found in your pantry. Milk, flour, sugar, and butter! You can get Polvoron molds from the grocery, SM supermarket has them.

When I was in high school, I cooked polvoron to sell for about P5 each and what a lucrative money making venture that was!

Here is my tried and tested recipe:

1. Toast 2 cups of all purpose flour in a pan. Don’t leave it by itself because you have to stir it to avoid burning. You have to achieve a light brown toasted color, this takes about 5-10 minutes, use low heat.

2. Remove flour from the pan and sift into a bowl.

Mommy Lace Tip: melt 1/2 cup butter using the hot pan you used for the flour, no need to fire up the stove again. Leave it for a minute or so, butter is added last.

3. Mix 1 cup of milk and 1 cup of sugar into the sifted toasted flour. Mix well.

4. Pour the melted butter and mix again so that all ingredients come together. You can use a fork for this.

5. Mold polvoron while hot and refrigerate molded pieces. The more butter you used, the better the polvoron will hold its shape.

I don’t bother wrapping them up to save the planet, I put them on a plate and pop them into the freezer for an hour. Afterwards, I transfer them into clear containers for everyone’s delight. I am surprised even Ashton loves to eat these, I just have to be very careful because it can choke babies easily. Use a small spoon and feed in small amounts if serving to babies and toddlers 🙂
