When Ashton was a few weeks old, everyday we had the aircon running, 24 hours. It was just natural for us to think that the baby will sleep very well with it. Having the windows opened meant dust and UV rays for me, certainly I don’t want those for the baby.
Yet after huge Meralco bills, I gradually “trained” Ashton to be at ease with just a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are obviously cheaper to run than the aircon and it meant we could stay at other parts of the house which are freely ventilated.
Afternoon baths can keep your baby cool and fresh
I like positioning Ashton on a futon at the living room area where other housemates can easily watch him. When he was smaller, he could even fit on the sofa. To keep him cool, I let him wear sleeveless shirts and give him a bath after lunch just before the hottest time of the day.
I know some moms shower their infants with baby powder. I haven’t tried that.
Futons are great for afternoon naps but don’t forget to pull the curtains to provide shade from the sunlight
You could also consider using heavier curtains, or put sun shades on the windows. This can help keep the warmth of the sun and even UV rays from getting in. If it’s hotter than usual, I use two electric fans – a big and small one. Still cheaper to run than airconditioning 🙂
But there are days that are unbearably hot – I just turn on the AC again and relax on the bed with my baby boy. I just remembered this because I bumped into Hansen Wholesale Ceiling Fans.
How do you keep your children cool? Did you also use the aircon 24/7 during the first few weeks/months of your baby?
