Independence Day 2015: Activities at Aguinaldo Shrine & Park

Today is the Philippines’ 117th Independence Day. Because I am from Cavite, we went to Aguinaldo Shrine this morning to witness the festivities. The park was filled with flags, banderitas, and booths selling Pinoy products and food fare.

Recently, I’ve been making an effort to expose our family especially my son to more local festivities and celebrations, where we can be one with the community and celebrate Filipino history and culture.

When we arrived, the flag was just about to be raised by government officials. It felt good to sing the National Anthem with my fellow Caviteños, tourists, and public servants.

This was followed by Panatang Makabayan and a prayer by the Archbishop of Imus.

Next up was the unveiling of a giant “tweet-powered” cake featuring messages of netizens that promote nationalism. The cake was made by Jollibee as part of their Happy Birthday Pilipinas project. The giant cake was  ushered by kids who are part of Jollibee Kids Club.

Even I was surprised that Jollibee is here to celebrate but he obviously was the star of the program. Kids rushed to have their photos taken.

My husband was also in Aguinaldo Shrine last night where he watched the 3D mapping light show by the Department of Tourism.

You can check his blog for the schedule: http://azraelsmerryland.blogspot.com/2015/06/3d-video-show-at-aguinaldo-shrine-in.html

As for me, I will come back later this afternoon and evening to watch the programs including the light show, play in the park with my son, and enjoy the booths. I hope I instill the meaning of Independence Day to my 5 years old and that he will always be proud to be a Filipino.

Watch out for Part II of my Independence Day posts, and if you are in Cavite or nearby – please visit our province and join the celebration.

Maligayang araw ng kalayaan! 🙂
