All Out Of Love is a thrilling musical that brings the music of Air Supply to life. Here’s what I can share about it after watching the performance during their Gala Night.
While the story revolves around the exciting musical career of Jaime Crimson played by real-life rock star, Mig Ayesa – everyone in the cast (and production) is a rock star in their own right. The musical is enthralling from start to finish and it’s because of the clean, flawless, and detailed performances of each and every character big or small. The story is set in New York but because Air Supply music is something many Filipinos like myself are familiar with, thanks to the Baby Boomers who raised us, the story remains relatable but with exciting & funny references to New York culture.
Apart from the familiar music whose lyrics most already know, the universal concept of family, love, and the dilemma of having to choose between career and love life, all make this musical close to some of our own realities in life.
The musical is also faithful to Air Supply’s music and Mig Ayesa is able to give it a modern rock star edge. I appreciated and really enjoyed the rock star character in this musical. Correct me if I’m wrong but I haven’t seen notable rock stars emerge since the time of Bon Jovi, Axle Rose, Stephen Tyler etc. All Out Of Love will make you reminisce that time in your life when you became the number 1 fan of your favorite rock star or band.
Next to Mig Ayesa is Rachel Alejandro who blew the audience away with her female rockstar persona that’s different from what we know. The tandem is a love team made in Broadway heaven! I will not say if the characters of Jaime and Rayne will kiss and make-up. With its funny kilig and hugot moments, the musical is poised to be a smash hit success.
In between the lovers (but in a good way) is the character of Stacie King played by Tanya Manalang. The role will remind you of Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods but with a powerful voice that transcends each and every corner of the New Port Theater. Tanya Manalang is the glue that binds the story together and packages it into an easy to consume musical that’s as universal as love.
Some of my favorite pieces in the musical are: The One That You Love– performed by Manalang and Ayesa, Sweet Dreams performed by Ayesa, Here I Am performed by Raymund Concepcion. If they were selling CDs outside of the theater, I would have bought it! That’s how much I enjoyed this musical from the way it sounds to the way it looks. No wonder the production received a standing ovation during this gala night and I’m sure every night thereafter.
Enjoy this musical and come out full of love and renewed appreciation for Air Supply’s music.
