Pregnancy and German Measles

As if the summer heat is not enough, cases of german measles has started to increase in the Philippines among children. This virus is really seasonal that goes with other types of measles or tigdas. The Department of Health has issued a warning for pregnant women to avoid being contaminated with german measles.

Department of Health talking about German Measles

Even before this news broke, I already knew how dangerous measles is to pregnancy. It can cause serious birth defects and can even be fatal to babies. Measles is especially dangerous for those who are in their first trimester and according to my research, the chances of having birth defects due to the rubella virus goes down as the pregnancy becomes older than 20 weeks.  (Read it here)

  • The best thing to do for now is to avoid places with lots of people especially children as they are the ultimate carriers of this virus.
  • If you can’t stay at home then maybe bring a gas mask to prevent inhaling contaminated droplets in the air.
  • Always wash your hands with soap and water (tell this to your housemates too, especially when they go in and out of the house).
  • If you think you were exposed to the virus or are not feeling well, contact your doctor immediately.
