Two months ago, I re-discovered the benefits of green tea after reading an article on how it can boost performance & fat burning during exercise. The last bits/percentage of fats especially in the tummy area are the hardest to rid of. Green tea will not instantly reveal six pack abs but it can contribute to the overall fitness strategy.
This is the brand of green tea I use which is made in Japan. I get it from SM supermarket. When it’s unavailable I just get the pure green tea of Twinnings.
Effect of green tea before working out
The first time I deliberately drank green tea an hour before working out, I significantly sweat more than the usual. Even on rest mode between sets, the sweat fest continued. It was an aha! moment for me and that coincided with the studies I read.
For me, the sweating indicated an increase in metabolic rate. However, note I am not an expert on this but I do know how to listen to my own body. Since then, I always drink green tea 30 minutes to an hour before my crossfit sessions.
Green tea at rest
I consume 2 cups of green tea a day. One before working out (afternoon) and one more cup after dinner. I feel it helps digest my dinner and at the same time, still improve metabolism even at rest. It also reduces intestinal gas so I feel less bloated after meals and have a regular bowel movement.
L-carnitine
I first thought L-carnitine is found in green tea, but that’s catechins which are different from L-carnitine. Natural sources of L-carnitine which is an amino-acid are protein-rich food like meat, fish, and poultry (source).
Some sugary drinks have also infused L-carnitine into their product for it to be considered a weight loss aid.
L-carnitine is similar to green tea in that it improves metabolism and performance. Other benefits are listed here. I haven’t thought of supplementing my diet with L-carnitine other than those I get from meat, fish, chicken, and dairy products.
